Selecting Quality Turkish Area Rugs

Quality Turkish rugs are both beautiful and functional. Moreover, they really hold their value well, yet they can fit any size of budget.

If you’re looking for a piece of art as an investment, but you want it to be useful as well, have you thought of buying a special rug? Quality Turkish rugs are both beautiful and functional. Moreover, they really hold their value well, yet they can fit any size of budget. A large, quality-woven handmade rug can cost as much as four thousand dollars, while a small, machine-made rug may cost as little as fifty dollars.

Although Turkish rugs got their name because of their popularity in Turkey, they are made in many different places in the Middle East and Africa. If you plan to go abroad to shop for rugs, be sure you find a reputable person to assist you with your purchase. Many shop owners work with local guides to sell rugs and they give the guides a percentage of the sales price. This means the prices may be inflated.

To be sure you pick the right rug, first look at the rug's weave. If it is perfect, it is probably machine made and not hand-woven. An authentic hand-woven rug will have an irregular weave, or slight gap between some of the knots. Cheap, mass-produced rugs usually have edges that are not finished properly or a skimpy fringe.

The best Turkish rugs are thick, luxurious, and made with one hundred percent wool. Some of the best rugs are made with a blend of wool and silk. You’ll also find rugs on the market that are made with cotton. These rugs do not wear well and have a low resale value. If it’s difficult to tell whether you’re looking at a wool rug or a cheap cotton rug, take a close look at the fringe. A wool rug should be made of wool right down to the last thread. If the fringe is cotton, the rug is not made of one hundred percent wool.

Don't be afraid to take your time looking at what a rug merchant has to offer. He won't be upset if you take your time rather than rushing through the shop. In fact, if you spend time looking at all his wares, he will consider it a sign of respect. He may even offer you a cup of tea to sip while you browse. Once you select a rug, the merchant will give you a price, but he will expect you to give a counter offer or two before committing to buy the rug. The first price he gives you will be more like a suggestion. Take your time and enjoy yourself.
