A few things that make shopping for kids rugs a little different than
shopping for carpet used in other areas of a home. Many people prefer a high,
thick carpet pile because of its soft feel and cushioning, but this type of
carpet may not be the most appropriate choice for a kids room.
1.A lower pile carpet is a flatter surface for children's play. It won't get in
the way of pulling toys, zooming trucks, and playing catch.
2. Dirt from various sources is a bigger consideration in kids rooms. A lower
carpet pile makes cleaning and vacuuming easier and more thorough. Vacuum
cleaners are better able to to clean all the way down to the bottom of carpet on
low pile rugs.
For these reasons, a pile height that is less than about 1/3 of an inch or so is
a great choice for rooms where children play. As an added bonus, shorter pile
heights generally also increase a rug's durability.
Another important factor in selecting a carpet for children is the type of fiber
in the carpet. Carpet fibers (either natural or synthetic), as well as the
application of stain treatment, will determine how stain resistant it will be.
Synthetic fibers (nylon or polypropylene) made from plastic are popular for kids
rooms since they usually tend to be more stain resistant."
